What’s your magic number?
THE ORIGINAL BROWNBOX
Input: 120VAC, 60 Hz; Standard IEC AC cable
Output: Two AC Grounded Outlets; Voltage Reduction Selectable
Power Handling: 5 Amps at 120VAC, 60 Hz, up to 540 Watts
Input voltage attenuator for tube amplifiers
Today, we should be receiving 120V AC from the wall, but depending on where you are and what time of day it is, you can receive anywhere from 120V to 129V. That’s not good for your amplifier, or your ears. Depending on the amplifier, a BrownBox user might discover that modern gear runs optimally at 116-118V, or as low as 108-110V for vintage gear. It’s impossible for an amplifier designed for 110V or 120V to sound or operate anywhere near the way it should at 129V.
The BrownBox features flexible voltage attenuation options that let you bring your power input down to an optimal level, resulting in significantly improved amplifier performance.
The Details
120 Volt AC, 60 Hz, 5 Amp Voltage Attenuator supplies up to 540 Watts, designed for small or mid to larger sized amplifiers (i.e. Fender Deluxe/Bassman/Twin, Marshall 50w/100w, Vox AC30). Can also be used for parallel or dual amp rigs.
Easy to read back-lit L.C.D. display enables real-time voltage and amperage monitoring - also useful for diagnostics
Two attenuation modes to help to fine-tune your voltage
Proprietary transformer design wound exclusively for use with tube amplifiers, an industry first
Equal or attenuated voltage output and a 5 amp fuse with in-rush current protection ensures that you will never accidentally overload your amplifier
Powder coated EMF neutral housing and tough road rugged construction
Silent, cool operation
THE BROWNBOX II
Input: 120VAC, 50/60 Hz; Standard IEC AC cable
Output: Two AC Grounded Outlets; Voltage Reduction Selectable
Power Handling: 5 Amps at 120VAC, 50/60 Hz, up to 540 Watts
Input voltage attenuator for tube amplifiers
All the goods as The Original BrownBox, but made for 120VAC at 50/60 Hz when powering American amps internationally
Why would you need a BrownBox II?
If you’re overseas - say, in a 220V country - but you’re using an amp that has a 120V power section, you’ll need a BrownBox II. Maybe you’re on tour and brought your own amp - maybe you live in a 220V country but you own an American powered amp. You can’t just plug it into the wall - you need a step down transformer to get from 220V to 120V - and then you can use the BrownBox II.
Why not just use a BrownBox?
Not all step down transformers are frequency compensating - that means that what you’re probably getting is 120V / 50Hz. That will fry an Original BrownBox - which is only meant for 120V / 60Hz - like an egg. To safely use our products with a step-down transformer, you’ll need a BrownBox II.
Can I use a BrownBox II in North america?
Absolutely. The BrownBox II accepts 50 Hz and above, so it is safe to operate it at both 120V/50Hz and 120V/60Hz. If you’re not taking the BrownBox out of North America, you really don’t need a BrownBox II - but YES, it will safely work.
